Problemas de Identidad returned for its third edition on Sunday, July 5, at Dear Friends Books in Bed-Stuy, with the launch of Declaration of Independence / Declaración de independencia, written by Ezequiel Zaidenwerg — author and co-founder of Como un Lugar — and translated by Hernán Bravo Varela.
This documentary poem, constructed exclusively from the United States Declaration of Independence, pit the founding archive against the somatic immediacy of a body politic. Unfolding original syntax to probe the pathology of American masculinity, Zaidenwerg enacted a rigorous exercise of constraint and reconfiguration, spanning the spectral distance from Thomas Jefferson to Donald Trump.
We came together for a choral reading in English and Spanish, in our own take on a Fourth of July celebration, complete with Argentine choripanes to close out the night.
